"Here at Yale-New Haven Hospital, we pride ourselves on being one of the preeminent Level One Trauma Centers in the country. We provide exemplary patient care, while engaging in cutting edge research in an Ivy League academic environment. To that end, we find our data needs to be complex, challenging, and ever changing.

Calvin Norway

When it came time to choose a Trauma Registry software package, we engaged in an extensive search, reviewing all the packages that were on the market at the time. We chose Traumabase. We’ve been using the software for 3 years and are very pleased with the results.

We’ve found the software to be extremely flexible, allowing us to change our registry as our research and patient care needs expand and change. The option of quickly, and easily, making changes to our data schema was one of the greatest strengths we saw in the software when making our decision. It allows us to expand, change, and adapt to the changing world of patient care, but maintains an integral, strong, standardized data schema that aids us in our ACS review, research projects, State Trauma Database interface, and regular monthly reporting.

We’ve also been pleased with the data entry mechanism within the software. Using a screen designed for YNHH, and then added to the standard version of the software, we’ve found data entry to be extremely easy and intuitive, while aiding in ensuring data integrity at the point of entry. In addition, the built in data checks ensure data entry accuracy after data entry is complete, and aid in our monthly Q and A process. Our average data entry accuracy rate is about 98% per month. In our high volume, high complexity environment, the importance of data accuracy just can not be overstated, and Traumabase, along with our skilled Registry Staff, is a big part of ensuring that accuracy.

But, as good as we’ve found the software to be, the Support Staff at CDM is even better. They are knowledgeable, friendly, and creative individuals who make up the single best support staff it has ever been my pleasure to interact with. I’ve been in IT for just over 10 years, have administered dozens of vendor supported applications, and I have never been as pleased with a vendor’s support of their application as I am with CDM’s support of Traumabase. Their responsiveness, ability to aid in solving any problem we’ve thrown at them, and willingness to engage in meaningful and thought provoking dialogue on any subject related to their product is unparalleled in this industry.

Needless to say, we are very pleased with our selection of Traumabase as our Trauma Registry Software package."

"Simplification of the complicated"

CDM's software is designed to accommodate all levels of users. Those with programming knowledge can work successfully at one level, while users from myriad backgrounds can work with equal success through menus, as well as point-and-click processes. This speaks to the flexibility of the software.

Users can also choose any of various ways to reach their final goal whether it be the data entry process, data manipulation, or report generation. Every user can function within their respective comfort zone and still be successful in their role with the software. This is possible because through knowing their clients, CDM is able to design and refine their product to meet the clients' needs and wants. This has been further demonstrated by software features that make it feasible and even simple to communicate with other databases, e.g., regional, state, and national databases.

Mile High RETAC

SHIRLEY TERRY, BSN, RN
Mile-High RETAC Coordinator
Denver, Colorado

I am the regional coordinator for the Mile-High Regional Emergency Medical and Trauma Advisory Council (RETAC), representing 13 hospitals, six counties and a trauma population of over 10,000 patients/year.  We have been in the process of developing an integrated trauma registry system for our RETAC since 2005.  The purpose of this system is to provide timely review and analysis of trauma care in the Denver area to improve patient care, streamline system integration and encourage cooperation of entities within the Mile-High region.  In addition, our goals include research and community prevention based on actual data obtained through the TraumaBase Regional Registry.  Clinical Data Management has been a crucial component to the success of the project, and has helped us to improve emergency medical access and capabilities offered to the population within the Denver metropolitan area.

Early in 2006 the Mile-High RETAC contracted with Clinical Data Management (CDM) to assist in the pursuit of the above goals. CDM has worked in an expeditious manner within our region to adjust data collection, improve data usability and assess program goals for research possibilities. They have also enhanced the collaboration that is needed between our diverse service providers, enabling the RETAC to swiftly move forward with its objectives.

CDM is a nationally respected data management company in the trauma field. Because of thisWith CDM’s highly qualified expertise with trauma data collection and reporting, Mile- High RETAC has been able to use its internal support and financial resources more efficiently and with greater results.  CDM has provided a workable repository for our data, eliminating the need for our RETAC to house and maintain an on-site system. CDM’s over twenty years of experience in trauma data management has been a tremendous help for our region with the development of obtainable goals of the program to expeditiously move forward.

This past year, Charles “Skip” Tinnell RN, MSPH, Director of Clinical Data Management, has presented numerous times to the RETAC, reporting on the condition of the data, status of the trauma registry, and has made recommendations as to potential research avenues for the region as well.  CDM has offered analytic insights regarding our region’s needs and strengths, benchmarking with trauma systems’ research across the United States, and has offered guidance as to the feasibility of collaborative projects the RETAC may undertake.  These analytic encouragements have provided Mile-High RETAC with additional confidence to pursue initiatives set forth by member hospitals.

I highly encourage trauma regions and states to utilize the resources of CDM which have assisted Mile- High RETAC to move towards our primary goal of improving patient trauma care throughout the Denver metropolitan region.
